For many decades, Scouting in South Africa focused on serving young people between the ages of 7 and 30. Recognising the broader developmental challenges within the South African context — particularly where access to quality early childhood education is limited — SCOUTS South Africa (SSA) identified the need to extend its programme to younger children aged 5–6.
The Meerkat Programme was therefore developed to address the critical developmental needs of early childhood. Research consistently demonstrates that early learning experiences form the foundation for later academic achievement, social competence, resilience, and long-term success. Foundational skills developed during these formative years significantly influence how individuals perform and function as adults.
Through the Meerkat Programme, SCOUTS South Africa intentionally supports early development by fostering confidence, curiosity, cooperation, responsibility, and basic life skills in a structured yet engaging environment.
SCOUTS South Africa remains committed to its core mission: preparing young people to overcome life’s challenges and to grow into skilled, confident, ethical, and productive members of society.
